IIT Madras and BITS Pilani Sign MoU for Academic Research

IIT Madras and BITS Pilani sign a five-year MoU to expand academic and research collaboration, including student and faculty exchanges, joint projects, seminars and access to academic resources.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani enter into a five-year partnership to expand academic collaboration, research opportunities and student and faculty exchange between the two institutions.

The two institutes formalise the collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the IIT Madras campus. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, and Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani, sign the agreement in the presence of senior academic and research representatives from both institutions.

Under the agreement, IIT Madras and BITS Pilani plan to explore joint activities in areas of mutual academic and research interest. The collaboration includes the exchange of students and faculty members, scholarly information, academic materials and publications.

The partnership also provides for the joint organisation of seminars, workshops and other academic meetings. These activities are intended to facilitate interaction among researchers, faculty members and students while supporting interdisciplinary academic engagement.

Both institutes bring established research ecosystems to the collaboration. IIT Madras conducts research across engineering, science, humanities and management, with opportunities available through PhD and MS by Research programmes as well as interdisciplinary research initiatives.

A key component of the agreement is a student exchange programme that allows students from IIT Madras and BITS Pilani to undertake coursework, research activities and project work at the partner institution.

Students participating in the programme are designated as special exchange students and can enroll in courses either for academic credit or on an audit basis. Participation is subject to approval from the relevant faculty members or project supervisors and fulfillment of applicable academic requirements.

The programme also includes tuition fee waivers at the host institution. Academic credits and grades earned during the exchange are recognised by the student's home institution based on the academic report issued by the host institution.

The collaboration is designed to create greater opportunities for academic mobility, interdisciplinary engagement and joint research. It also enables students and faculty members to access the academic expertise, research capabilities and resources available at both institutions.

Through the five-year partnership, IIT Madras and BITS Pilani aim to strengthen institutional interaction and provide students and researchers with additional avenues for academic exchange, collaborative projects and research engagement.
