IIT Madras to Launch AI Studio to Turn Research Into Startups

IIT Madras launches the Wadhwani AI Studio to transform AI, machine learning and data science research into startups, offering researchers and external founders mentorship, infrastructure and funding support.
The Wadhwani AI Studio is being established at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) through the Wadhwani School of Data Science & AI (WSAI) to facilitate the faster transition of innovative research work into technology-oriented startups. This program aims to serve as a medium for bringing about a link between academic research and commercial usage, which will aid in the development of business ventures in the field of AI/ML/Data Science.
While programs that are restricted only to students or researchers at the institute are common, the AI Studio is also welcoming outside founders to join in the program. Researchers and academic founders from IIT Madras, or any other institution, as well as entrepreneurs with ideas related to AI, ML or data science, will be eligible for participation. Applications for the first cohort will be opened on October 3, 2026.

The studio operates on a six-month venture building program, under which selected teams get assistance to develop themselves from research-based ideas into commercial entities. The program places its emphasis on identifying market demand, product development, customer validation, and preparation of the venture for investment and incubation at IIT Madras Incubation Cell.
The participants get access to mentorship, infrastructure, and funding related support while working on their ideas. This program aims at helping the teams assess the commercial viability of the results of their research and developing products which can help solve real world needs. The more extensive venture-studio program at IIT Madras is based on developing AI-first ventures out of research results.
Additionally, the project helps in building the entrepreneurship drive of IIT Madras by involving individuals from outside the institute, thus creating an environment where academics, entrepreneurs, and industry-oriented teams can collaborate on the commercialization of AI technology.

The AI Studio will be responsible for choosing teams two times in a year, and in turn, giving a definite path through which these ideas could develop into startups. For the scientists and inventors, this program gives them a chance to move their innovations outside of research papers, whereas the external entrepreneurs will have a chance to utilize the academic and technology environment.
With the help of Wadhwani AI Studio, IIT Madras seeks to build a link between research, entrepreneurship, and industry, and may result in generating a stream of startups from research using AI.
