IIT Madras and IIT Dharwad Partner on Research and Education

IIT Madras and IIT Dharwad sign an MoU to expand academic exchanges, share research facilities, promote joint projects and strengthen entrepreneurship, with a focus on innovation and North Karnataka's development.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in education, research and entrepreneurship. The agreement, signed on October 8, 2026, in the presence of Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, aims to promote knowledge-sharing, academic engagement and innovation across the IIT network.

The partnership provides for faculty and student exchanges, alongside the sharing of laboratories, libraries, research equipment and other institutional resources. These arrangements are expected to improve access to research infrastructure and enable both institutions to make better use of their academic capabilities.

The agreement also encourages the exchange of academic publications and research reports. Joint workshops, seminars, lectures and conferences are among the activities intended to bring faculty members and students together, identify common research interests and support the development of new ideas.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi welcomes the agreement and says it can serve as a model for collaboration among IITs. He emphasises that combining institutional strengths can expand research opportunities and accelerate innovation.

Joshi highlights IIT Madras's established ecosystem in research, technology development and entrepreneurship as a valuable resource for IIT Dharwad. The partnership is expected to encourage joint research projects involving faculty members and students, while creating opportunities in areas such as patents, start-ups, industry partnerships and social innovation.

Joshi notes that IIT Dharwad plays an important role in advancing higher education in North Karnataka. He says collaboration with IIT Madras can further strengthen the region's capabilities in education, research and entrepreneurship.

The minister also stresses that signing the MoU marks only the beginning of the partnership. Its long-term value will depend on clear objectives, sustained institutional support and the activities undertaken by both institutions.

By combining their expertise and facilities, IIT Madras and IIT Dharwad aim to contribute to regional development and India's ambition to emerge as a global leader in knowledge, science and technology.
