IIT Madras Launches New UG, PG Programmes for 2026
Synopsis: Indian Institute of Technology Madras launches new UG and PG programmes for 2026–27 across AI, robotics, semiconductors, sustainable engineering, public policy, and advanced technology-focused disciplines.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras has launched a wide range of new undergraduate, postgraduate, and web-enabled academic programmes for the 2026-27 academic year, expanding into emerging interdisciplinary fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, semiconductor technology, sustainable engineering, public policy, and advanced manufacturing.
The institute stated that the new programmes are designed to combine theoretical learning with industry-oriented applications and align with growing demand in high-impact technology sectors. The initiative reflects IIT Madras’ broader focus on preparing students for rapidly evolving industries linked to AI, semiconductor fabrication, computational engineering, quantitative finance, and advanced manufacturing systems.
Among the major additions is a four-year BS Programme in Mathematics introduced by the Department of Mathematics. Students enrolled in the programme will also have the option to pursue an additional year and graduate with a dual BS-MS degree. The curriculum includes electives in computational mathematics, cryptography, quantitative finance, data analytics, and AI-enabled manufacturing.

IIT Madras has also introduced an MTech programme in Semiconductor Materials Technology focused on semiconductor fabrication processes, nanomanufacturing, and materials engineering. The institute said the programme aims to support India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem by training specialists in chip manufacturing and process engineering.
Other newly launched programmes include MTech in Robotics, MSc in Sustainable Engineering, MSc in Sports Analytics and AI, MSc in Offshore and Maritime Engineering, MSc in Materials and Manufacturing, MTech in Process Safety, and BS programmes in Aeronautics and Space Technology as well as Management and Data Science.
The institute additionally launched an MA in Public Policy that will focus on governance, policy design, healthcare, education, transportation, finance, and environmental management. Officials noted that the programme is intended to strengthen interdisciplinary policy research and public administration capabilities.
Industry experts believe IIT Madras’ latest academic expansion reflects India’s increasing emphasis on deep-tech education, semiconductor self-reliance, AI talent development, and industry-academia collaboration in future-focused sectors.
