Google $15B AI hub in India to create 5,000–6,000 jobs

  • Google's $15B AI hub in Visakhapatnam creates 5,000–6,000 direct jobs.
  • Includes gigawatt data center, subsea cables to 12+ countries.
  • Accelerates AI for sectors like healthcare, education; revenue Rs 10,000 Cr for state.

Google revealed that it is going to invest $15 billion to build its biggest AI hub in a place outside the USA which is in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The hub will have a gigawatt-scale hyperscale data center campus, increased power capacity, as well as extended subsea and terrestrial fiber networks.

The signing of the MoU with the government of Andhra Pradesh is expected to bring about a direct employment of 5,000–6,000 people and a total of 20,000–30,000 jobs, thereby creating a revenue of around Rs 10,000 crore for the state and making Visakhapatnam a global connectivity hub.

The CEO of Google Cloud, Thomas Kurian, considered it as a “multi-layered investment” that would speed up the AI revolution in the sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and industry. Besides that, the local facility will have the data for sovereign requirements, will incorporate the use of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) which are proprietary, and will be running different models like Gemini, Imagine, and Veo, thus helping Google’s services such as Search, YouTube, and Workspace to work better. Besides that, the facility will be able to provide infrastructure which is of low-latency and high-performance to developers, enterprises, researchers, and startups from India.

However, on the other hand, Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X said, “This center is a fusion of computing at the gigawatt scale, a brand new subsea international gateway, as well as large-scale energy infrastructure which will lead to the introduction of industry-leading technology in India.” Google ensures connection to Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and 12 other countries via underwater cables through partnerships with Adani (AdaniConnex) and Airtel.

The proposal that covers the period from 2026 to 2030 is in line with India’s AI mission and Viksit Bharat 2047 dream, thus preparing the ground for the innovation that would be raised by an AI market that is worth $17 billion by 2027. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw acknowledged the project as a great push to AI infrastructure, startups, and opportunities for the youth.
