NEET UG 2025: NMC Revises MBBS, BDS Seat Matrix

  • NMC revises 2025–26 MBBS and BDS seat matrix, reducing 50 seats.
  • 456 seats removed due to data errors during renewal process update.
  • NEET UG 2025 stray vacancy registration opens November 4 for candidates.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released an updated seat matrix for admissions to Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in medical colleges throughout India for the academic year 2025-26.

As per the most recent update, the overall count of medical seats has been modified from 1,28,925 to 1,28,875, indicating a decrease of 50 seats. The update follows the Commission's addition of 11,350 new seats this year, which includes those at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

A prior version of the seat matrix noted an addition of 11,400 seats, resulting in a 100-seat discrepancy when aligned with the most recent numbers. The NMC explained that in the renewal process for 2025-26, 456 seats were deleted because of typographical mistakes made when updating institutional information.

Here is the distribution of MBBS seats in medical colleges by region based on the most recent NMC data:

In another announcement, the Commission has instructed students in postgraduate super speciality programmes to confirm their names and information on the official NMC website. Individuals with missing names have been instructed to promptly reach out to their relevant Directorate of Medical Education (DME) or the assigned counselling authority for correction.

Candidates who did not receive a seat in any of the earlier rounds of NEET UG 2025 counselling will be allowed to join the stray vacancy round. According to the official timeline, registration for the stray round will start on November 4, and the participating institutions will publish the provisional seat matrix on that day.

Candidates who obtain a spot in this round must attend the designated college with all necessary paperwork to finalize their enrollment. The NMC has specified that not accepting the assigned seat in this round will lead to disqualification from taking the next NEET UG exam for one year and loss of the counselling fee. Candidates are encouraged to frequently check the official website for additional updates.
