NMC–ICMR to Launch PhD Programmes, Boost Clinical Research: Chief

The National Medical Commission (NMC), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), will soon launch PhD programmes and enhance clinical research to support homegrown innovations in medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
The NMC chairman, Dr. Abhijat Sheth, announced the 3rd convocation of Bhaikaka University in Karamsad, Anand, on Sunday. While speaking to graduating students, Dr. Sheth mentioned that the initiative is designed to enhance India's medical research landscape and promote healthcare solutions driven by innovation.
He mentioned that 18,000 more medical seats have received approval nationwide, alongside initiatives to enhance faculty capacity and provide fair, high-quality medical education.
He noted that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing rapidly, rendering self-care, preventive healthcare, and the ATCOM module on professionalism essential elements of NMC's training reforms. Using lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic, he emphasized the importance of cultivating a preparedness culture among healthcare workers.

The event saw attendance from BU president Dr Gauri Trivedi, Provost Dr Abhay Dharamsi, and additional officials. It also included the 20th H M Patel Memorial Lecture, presented by pediatrician and public health specialist Dr. Pravitra Mohan on "Equitable Healthcare in India: Leading the Change."
The event emphasized the increasing focus on interdisciplinary education, digital health skills, and community-focused training, reflecting the sector’s larger transition towards innovation-led, patient-centered, and globally competitive medical education in India.
