IIT Kharagpur Signs MoU With TU Darmstadt to Boost Research Ties

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt, located in Germany. The deal, formalized on 24 May, seeks to improve collaboration in academics, research, and innovation across various fields.
This initiative comes after a senior visit by a seven-member delegation from TU Darmstadt to IIT Kharagpur on 20 March. During this visit, detailed conversations took place between the leadership teams of both organizations to discover common interests and establish a foundation for a lasting partnership.
The delegation from IIT Kharagpur was headed by Prof Rintu Banerjee, the deputy director, and comprised senior officials including Prof Rabibrata Mukherjee, dean of research and development; Prof Debashish Chakravarty, dean of international relations; Prof Bhargab Maitra, dean of student affairs; and Prof. Swati Maitra from the Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of infrastructure design and management.

Representing TU Darmstadt, the discussions were led by Prof. Thomas Walther, vice-president for Innovation and International Affairs, alongside Dr. Jana Freihöfer, dean of international affairs. The discussions encompassed a diverse array of academic fields, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, mechanical and aerospace engineering, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering, political science, biological sciences, medical sciences, biotechnology, and industrial engineering.
Speaking on the collaboration, Prof Rintu Banerjee, deputy director stated, “The MoU covers academic and research collaboration between the two institutes in all areas of mutual interest and includes the possibilities of faculty and student exchanges and the SAP (Study Abroad Programme).”
The MoU details an extensive framework for collaboration, including programs for the exchange of students and faculty, joint research projects, and cooperative academic ventures. Both organizations conveyed hope that the agreement will result in significant interdisciplinary research and create new opportunities in worldwide educational exchange.
