  • Madras University opens MUFES 2025-26 for low-income students.
  • Applicants must be TN residents, pass Plus 2 in 2024-25, and earn under ₹3L.
  • Three free seats per college for orphans, first-gen grads, and 80%+ scorers; apply by May 26.

According to a report by Jagran Josh, Madras University has begun accepting applications from students pursuing higher education through its Free Education Scheme for the academic year 2025-26.

Students who have finished Plus 2 in this academic year and desire to seek professional degrees from colleges associated with Madras University can take advantage of this initiative.

The Madras University Free Education Scheme (MUFES), functioning since the academic year 2010-11, is designed for students hailing from economically disadvantaged families whose annual household income is less than Rs 3 lakh.

To take part in MUFES 2025, students need to fulfill certain requirements. Candidates must be residents of Tamil Nadu and have completed both Plus 1 and Plus 2 exams.

The program requires that students have finished Plus 2 in the ongoing academic year (2024-25) and have successfully passed all subjects on their first try.

Every participating college is assigned at least three complimentary seats, authorized as extra seats beyond the college's sanctioned capacity, and distributed fairly among three categories. Category I comprises one-third of the seats allocated for children of widows, children of widowers, orphans, and underprivileged children, determined by their performance in core subjects.

Category II encompasses one-third of the seats allocated for first-generation graduates, students with disabilities, and transgender students, with selection also based on their academic subject scores. Category III includes the remaining one-third of the seats, allocated for merit students who have achieved 80% or higher in their major subjects.

The essential financial requirement stipulates that the overall annual income of the family must not surpass Rs 3 lakh. Students may submit their applications via the official website unom.ac.in by the deadline of May 26, 2025.

The program offers important chances for financially disadvantaged students to enroll in degree programs at aided and self-supporting colleges linked to Madras University.
