China Adds 38 New UG Majors in AI, Energy Fields

China has implemented a major reform to its higher education system through its addition of 38 undergraduate programs which will become active in its academic programs for 2026. The Ministry of Education announced that the new programs will be part of the next college entrance examination cycle which is known as the Gaokao.

The program aims to enhance student readiness for the fast-changing fields of artificial intelligence and energy and advanced technologies which now drive the country's economic expansion and innovation development.

The revised catalogue shows significant improvement through its new focus on interdisciplinary studies. The university established its first dedicated interdisciplinary category which includes existing programs and newly developed programs that feature embodied intelligence and brain-computer science.

The university seeks to promote cross-disciplinary education through this initiative which will develop graduates who possess skills needed to solve complicated modern challenges.

The updated catalogue now spans 13 major academic disciplines, 92 subcategories, and a total of 883 undergraduate majors. The authorities plan to establish emerging industries while modernizing traditional sectors through the introduction of forward-looking courses that include biomanufacturing and energy science and agricultural robotics.

The government is fast-tracking important programs to be implemented at specific universities which focus on advanced fields such as artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to enhance technological adoption in the economy through specialized advanced technology development.
