HSBC to Launch AI and Emerging Technology Institute in Hong Kong

HSBC partners with HKUST to establish a global AI and Emerging Technology Institute in Hong Kong in Q1 2027, focusing on AI safety, fraud detection, blockchain and post-quantum cryptography.

In the first quarter of 2027, HSBC is scheduled to set up an Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Emerging Technologies Institute in Hong Kong, increasing its investments in technology research and innovation in finance. This will be accomplished in cooperation with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), which will act as the key academic partner in the institute.

The decision to launch this venture has been announced by HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery at the Hong Kong FinTech Week 2026. The institute will aim at developing technologies which can be used by HSBC across its business operations.

In terms of the specific focus areas at the very beginning of operation, there will be a focus on AI skillsets, AI safety, AI fraud detection and engineering optimization. Some of the other research areas will include post-quantum cryptography and blockchain technology.

One of the areas that will be under examination will be the identification of methods to prevent and counter any new methods of fraud that have developed in conjunction with agentic AI. With AI agents interacting more with digital platforms and finance services, there will be an examination of possible security methods to keep customers and banks safe.

This collaboration combines the research and academic capacity of HKUST with HSBC's expertise in the field of finance services. This project is set to be established in Hong Kong first before moving to the Northern Metropolis upon the identification of a suitable location. This site forms part of Hong Kong’s plans aimed at improving the innovative and technological environment in the region.

This project is a result of HSBC’s dedication towards developing Hong Kong into an international financial and technology hub. HSBC is counting on the institute to improve on their customer service, operations and technology.

The announcement comes under HSBC's wider AI transformation plan. In addition, the bank is going to offer AI training to its worldwide workforce of about 200,000 people that includes about 28,000 staff members in Hong Kong.

Elhedery says that the bank wants to enable employees to adjust to the changes caused by AI without letting uncertainty affect the workforce. The program tries to build the skills of the employees along with embedding AI into banking operations and services.

HSBC plans to foster collaboration between academics and the financial industry and to conduct research on AI and other technologies through the new institute. This collaboration will facilitate the development of safe and practical technology applications in the banking industry.
