National Overseas Scholarship: Key Details for Students

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has started accepting applications for the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) 2026-27 which provides financial support to Indian students from marginalized groups who want to study abroad.

The scholarship scheme is designed to support eligible students seeking admission to Master’s and PhD programmes at recognised international universities. The application period starts on April 24 and ends on June 2 while applicants can still edit their submitted forms until June 7 through the correction window.

The National Overseas Scholarship mainly assists students from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Denotified and Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes and landless agricultural labourers and traditional artisan communities.

The program establishes educational pathways which enable economically disadvantaged students to participate in worldwide academic programs. The officials announced that their program intends to enhance social and economic progress for disadvantaged communities through international educational experiences.

Under the programme, selected candidates receive comprehensive financial support which includes tuition fees, living expenses, visa charges, medical insurance airfare and contingency allowances. The scholarship supports postgraduate and doctoral studies in several disciplines at reputed overseas institutions. According to government guidelines, 125 scholarships are offered annually, with 30 percent of seats reserved for female candidates.

To qualify, applicants must belong to the specified categories and meet income eligibility requirements prescribed by the ministry. Candidates need to establish admission at accredited international universities before the final decision process.

The online registration system requires applicants to upload their academic certificates, caste documents, income proof documents and admission-related identification records. The authorities have issued a warning that any incomplete applications or incorrect information will lead to application rejection.

Education experts believe the National Overseas Scholarship continues to help disadvantaged Indian students access international educational opportunities. The scheme serves as a vital financial resource which helps international degree students access worldwide institutions and advanced research facilities. Online student discussions show that study-abroad aspirants throughout India are becoming more aware of the scholarship program.
