AIIMS Doctors Push for NExT to Reform Medical Education

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences stakeholders urge early implementation of NExT to improve medical education system efficiency.
  • NExT aims to replace multiple exams with a unified, standardized assessment for medical graduates nationwide.
  • Experts believe exam will enhance clinical skills evaluation, fairness, and alignment with healthcare industry requirements.

Doctors and students and faculty members from All India Institute of Medical Sciences have requested the government to implement the National Exit Test (NExT) as soon as possible because they believe it will improve India's medical education system.

Experts from various AIIMS campuses revealed through their editorial work and stakeholder discussions that the existing examination system for medical students suffers from both disunity and lack of standardization.

The existing evaluation system which includes both university exams and postgraduate entrance tests fails to test practical, clinical skills because it does not match the requirements of competency-based training.

NExT has been proposed as a unified, standardized examination that would replace several existing tests, including final MBBS exams, NEET-PG, and the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination.

The test introduces a single assessment system which maintains transparency and requires clinically relevant medical knowledge as proof of competency for medical graduates who wish to start their professional careers.

Experts believe that such a system would simplify the process of medical examinations while enhancing educational standards because it better reflects the actual needs of healthcare delivery systems.

The NExT structure which has been proposed consists of theoretical elements and clinical elements which create a well-rounded assessment system that evaluates both educational attainment and practical skills.

The advocates of the program believe that its implementation will bring fairer assessment methods while decreasing duplicate testing requirements and establishing better pathways for medical students who want to enter their professional careers.

The implementation of NExT demonstrates a widespread movement that aims to update India's medical education system by creating a system that operates more efficiently while providing clear information and producing highly skilled healthcare professionals.
