UP Doubles MBBS Intern Stipend From ₹12,000 to ₹25,000

Uttar Pradesh doubles the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns in government medical institutions from ₹12,000 to ₹25,000. The Cabinet approves the hike to support interns during compulsory clinical training.

In Uttar Pradesh, the government has decided to double the amount of stipend given to MBBS and BDS interns who have to undergo compulsory rotatory internships in government medical colleges/medical universities in Uttar Pradesh. The stipend is raised from Rs.12, 000 to Rs.25, 000 per month after approval by the State Cabinet led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

This policy gives higher financial assistance to medical and dental graduates during their compulsory period of internship where they gain clinical experience. The new allowance is meant for students who have finished their exams either of MBBS or BDS and who are doing their compulsory rotational internships at government medical colleges.

While on the internship program, students will be working with the doctors and other staff members in the hospital, engaging in various clinical tasks in different departments. This includes providing help in patient care in OPD and emergency wards. Students are also required to perform night shifts during this process. The salary raise will help them cover their expenses while carrying out these professional roles.

It is important to mention that the latest increment is the second increment in the internship stipend made by the current government of Uttar Pradesh. In 2021, the stipend for a month increased from ₹7,500 to ₹12,000. In terms of figures, the latest increment has been almost twice as much as the last one.

This decision comes in the wake of a protest recently held by the MBBS interns demanding an increase in their stipend. Interns from various government-run medical colleges conduct a protest on 22nd August at the King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. The students of the following medical colleges, among others, are protesting: KGMU, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, and Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College, Meerut.

This change in stipend will help interns receive better financial assistance while fulfilling their clinical duties and pursuing their training. It also acknowledges the role played by interns in the provision of patient-care services at government hospitals.

Another youth-oriented scheme is approved by the Cabinet in the same meeting. It is related to purchasing 25 lakh tablets under the Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Scheme. These tablets are to be distributed to the eligible students enrolled in the undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and skill development courses. The budget allocation for this scheme for 2026-27 is ₹2,374.60 crore.

The increase in stipend, therefore, indicates a substantial shift in the financial assistance being offered to the intern doctors and dentists of Uttar Pradesh. By increasing the monthly allowance to ₹25,000, the government has aimed at providing assistance to the students during their compulsory clinical internship tenure, which was a long-pending demand by the medical interns.
