Tokyo Launches Scholarships for Global Universities

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government launches a new scholarship programme to support talented students seeking higher education opportunities at leading universities around the world. The initiative aims to reduce financial barriers for students pursuing international education and encourage the development of future global leaders.

The scholarship programme provides financial assistance of up to ¥8 million per year for eligible students during the duration of their degree programmes. The funding is designed to cover significant overseas education expenses, including tuition costs, helping students access prestigious institutions that may otherwise be financially challenging.

Applications for the scholarship programme begin from July 1 and continue until August 19 for students planning to start their studies in the following academic year. The selection process focuses on identifying outstanding candidates with strong academic performance, leadership potential, and a clear commitment to contributing to society.

The programme is available to students who meet specific eligibility requirements, including Japanese citizenship, residence in Tokyo, and enrolment in a Tokyo metropolitan high school. Around 10 students are expected to be selected through a competitive evaluation process.

Selected scholars can receive support for universities ranked among the world’s top institutions. The eligibility criteria include admission to universities placed within the top 100 of major global rankings such as Times Higher Education or QS World University Rankings. Certain specialised fields, including arts, design, music, performing arts, and sports-related disciplines, are also included under specific ranking criteria.

The scholarship amount varies depending on household income, with higher support available for students requiring greater financial assistance. The programme provides non-repayable aid, allowing recipients to focus on their studies without the burden of repayment after graduation.

Through this initiative, Tokyo aims to strengthen international exposure among young learners and promote broader participation in global academic opportunities. The programme reflects the city’s focus on developing internationally minded students who can contribute to innovation, research, and cross-border collaboration.

The launch of the scholarship highlights the increasing importance of financial support in expanding access to world-class education.
