University of Colorado Denver to Open Hyderabad Campus in 2027

The University of Colorado Denver receives a UGC Letter of Intent to establish a degree-granting campus in Hyderabad, with programmes in business, computing, engineering and analytics planned from August 2027.

The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) receives a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a degree-granting location in Hyderabad, marking its planned entry into India’s higher education sector. The university expects to welcome its first cohort of students in August 2027, subject to completion of the required regulatory processes.

The proposed Hyderabad location is set to become the first campus of an American public university in India under the current framework and the first foreign university location in Telangana. The initiative aligns with the internationalisation objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes greater global engagement and collaboration in higher education.

CU Denver plans to initially offer programmes in areas including business, computing, engineering and analytics. The programmes are intended to combine academic learning with applied and experiential education, preparing students for evolving industry requirements.

The university says the Hyderabad location will draw on CU Denver’s strengths as a public urban research university and emphasise career readiness, interdisciplinary learning, student outcomes and workforce relevance. Students are expected to benefit from an academic experience connected to the university’s broader global and research ecosystem.

Global education company Emeritus is serving as CU Denver’s strategic joint venture partner in India. The partnership will support the establishment and growth of the Hyderabad location, particularly across key non-academic functions.

The initiative is expected to expand access to globally connected education for Indian students while strengthening academic and industry linkages. CU Denver also plans to engage with academic, industry and other stakeholders as the institution develops.

The proposed campus operates within the regulatory framework established by the UGC for foreign higher educational institutions. Under the 2023 regulations, eligible foreign universities can establish Indian campuses offering undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral programmes, subject to UGC approval.

The Union government says UGC has issued multiple Letters of Intent to foreign higher education institutions seeking to establish campuses in India, reflecting the broader push to internationalise the country’s higher education ecosystem.

As plans progress, CU Denver will continue regulatory consultations and stakeholder engagement before launching its Hyderabad operations. Additional programmes are expected to be proposed to the UGC for approval in subsequent years.
