University of Michigan Extends Free Google Career Certificates

The University of Michigan has announced an expansion of its partnership with Google to offer free Google Career Certificates to its global alumni network through Michigan Online.

The industry-recognized credentials which were previously available to students faculty members and staff will now are offered at no cost to approximately 700000 University of Michigan alumni who possess a valid university uniqname and email address.

The university's Center for Academic Innovation which manages digital learning strategy and credential delivery systems is responsible for coordinating the project.

The expansion continues from its previous phases which began in 2025 when Google Career Certificates first became available to students who were enrolled in the program and then to faculty and staff members.

Through this update, U-M alumni gain access to lifelong learning opportunities which include digital technology credentials that cover various in-demand skills, such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, cyber security, digital marketing, information technology, project management, and user experience design.

The institution provides online courses which include short modules that require less than 10 hours to finish and extended certificate programs which students need several months to complete.

Alumni access more than 300 free online courses which University of Michigan faculty teach through the Michigan Online platform after they complete their certificate programs. University leaders say the move reflects the institution’s commitment to expanding access to opportunities and supporting lifelong learning at all stages of a career.

Google Career Certificates help learners reach positive career outcomes within months after they complete their studies because the program teaches essential job skills which employers require in the digital economy.

The initiative expands educational opportunities to University of Michigan alumni, who can use it to develop their professional abilities and keep up with technological and business changes.
