9,500+ Seats Vacant at DU as AADTA Criticizes CUET Admission
- DU has 9,543 vacant undergraduate seats after seven admission rounds in 2025.
- AADTA criticizes CUET-CSAS for mismatches, delays, and academic disruptions.
- Calls for restoring college-led admissions to protect DU’s reputation.
Delhi University (DU) is grappling with a total of 9,543 vacant undergraduate seats (UNS), in its colleges, following 7 admission rounds out in 2025. For example, the graduated students colleges with the highest vacant seats are Bhagini Nivedita (709 vacant seats), Aditi (674), Zakir Husain (387) and Kalindi (385).
The All India Ad-hoc Teachers' Association (AADTA) condemned the CUET-based Central Seat Allocation System (CSAS) brought in under National Education Policy 2020, while raising concerns about its effect to DU's reputation. Ongoing mop-up round is unlikely to sort out situation, prompting concern regarding the centralized method.

AADTA states CUET-CSAS leads to extended admissions, mismatched hopes for student choice and allotments, and disruption to academics, with late-admitted students losing over a month of academic classes. This may lead to a possible decline in Delhi University’s national and global reputation.
The Ministry of Education's observation of "redundant departments" by remaining vacancies refers to the filled departmental enrollment numbers, as it may impact the variation of academic programs presented at DU and the professors’ class loads. AADTA's National In-charge, Dr. Aditya Narayan Misra, has suggested returning to pre-2022 cut-offs set by individual colleges via DUET or will further damage the reputation of the university.
In 2022, CUET replaced the cut-off system employed by DU, which often resulted in colleges filling their seats at 98-100%. Although meant to create fairness, some critics point out that CUET contributed to the delays and unfilled seats, with 68,208 of the 71,624 seats filled as of August.
