IIT Kanpur Launches Cybersecurity Degree Without JEE

Synopsis: IIT Kanpur launches a new Bachelor of Science programme in Cybersecurity, offering admission without requiring a JEE Advanced score. The programme focuses on digital security, ethical hacking, cyber defence and emerging technology skills.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has launched a new Bachelor of Science (BS) programme in Cybersecurity, creating an alternative pathway for students aspiring to build careers in the rapidly expanding field of digital security. Unlike traditional undergraduate programmes at IITs, admission to this course does not require candidates to qualify through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced.
The newly introduced programme aims to address the growing demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals across industries, government organisations and technology sectors. With increasing digital transformation and rising cyber threats, the course focuses on developing expertise in protecting information systems, securing networks and preventing cyber-attacks.
The BS in Cybersecurity programme is designed to provide students with strong foundations in computer science, programming, data protection and security technologies. The curriculum covers key areas such as network security, cryptography, ethical hacking, cyber forensics, secure software development and risk management. Through this interdisciplinary approach, students gain both theoretical understanding and practical skills required in the cybersecurity domain.
Admission to the programme follows a separate selection process and does not depend on JEE Advanced qualification. The initiative allows students interested in cybersecurity to access IIT Kanpur’s academic ecosystem through a specialised programme focused on one of the most critical technology sectors.

The programme also emphasises hands-on learning through practical sessions, projects and industry-oriented training. Students are expected to work on real-world cybersecurity challenges, helping them understand security operations, threat detection and defence mechanisms used in modern digital environments.
Cybersecurity has become a major priority for businesses and governments due to the rapid adoption of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital payments and connected technologies. The new undergraduate programme is expected to prepare graduates for careers such as cybersecurity analysts, security engineers, digital forensic specialists, risk consultants and technology researchers.
IIT Kanpur has previously introduced specialised cybersecurity programmes at the postgraduate level, reflecting the institute’s continued focus on strengthening education and research in digital security. The new BS programme expands this effort by making cybersecurity education available at the undergraduate stage.
The launch of the BS in Cybersecurity programme highlights the changing landscape of technical education, where specialised skills and emerging technologies are becoming increasingly important. The initiative provides students with a focused academic route to enter one of the fastest-growing areas of the technology sector.
