The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has declared that it will conduct the final event of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 - Hardware Edition from December 8 to 12. The occasion is of great importance as it aligns with the platinum jubilee of the institute, a milestone that highlights its legacy of technological leadership, innovation, and contributions to nation-building, stated an institute representative.
Initiated in 2017 and coordinated by the Innovation Cell (MIC) of the Ministry of Education along with the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Smart India Hackathon has evolved into the globe’s largest open innovation platform, enabling higher education students to address genuine challenges presented by ministries, government agencies, industries, and NGOs.
The initiative persists under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, with co-patrons such as Union MoS Education Sukanta Majumdar, Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, and AICTE Chairman Prof TG Sitharam, as stated by the spokesperson, who mentioned that the PM will inaugurate the event online.
SIH 2025 has established new records for participation with 72,165 submitted ideas, 68,766 student teams, and 271 problem statements obtained from ministries, public sector undertakings, corporations, and industry partners, he stated.
At the institutional level, 2,587 higher education institutions, 142,715 teams, and 826,635 students participated in internal hackathons, rendering this edition one of the most inclusive national innovation initiatives to date.
