IIT-BHU Revamps 5-Year Dual Degree Programs into BTech

- IIT BHU revamps five-year IDD programs into BTech for 2025 undergraduate intake.
- Curriculum updated to align with NEP; students can now exit after six semesters.
- MTech IDD remains voluntary; existing students continue the original integrated program; seats unchanged.
In a significant change to its undergraduate framework, IIT BHU Varanasi has declared that multiple five-year Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) programs will not be available this year due to a total revamp of the model.
The institute stated that the choice arises from an extensive curriculum overhaul conducted in 2024–25 to synchronize its undergraduate programs with the National Education Policy (NEP). A major reason, IIT BHU observed, was the "rigid" characteristics of the previous IDD framework.
IIT BHU Varanasi clarified that students enrolled in the previous IDD programmes were obligated to finish a five-year integrated course resulting in both BTech and MTech degrees. Since the program was entirely integrated, students had no choice to leave after four years and graduate solely with a BTech.
“It was found that many students wanted to exit or wanted an option to leave the programmes after completing the B Tech part. However, an exit option at that level was not possible due to the integrated nature of the programmes,” IIT BHU Varanasi said.
IIT BHU provides 17 IDD programs, with 13 not included in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority undergraduate counseling. After the curriculum revision for 2024-25, the institute resolved that starting July 2025, all positions in the MTech IDD programs would be transformed into BTech positions in their respective fields. The institute stressed that this does not decrease the number of undergraduate admissions via JEE Advanced.

Simultaneously, IIT BHU confirmed that the MTech IDD program remains active. Instead, it will now be voluntary, allowing students to opt in "at the conclusion of the sixth semester" of their BTech program in the same field, lengthening the overall duration to 10 semesters.
The institute stated that every student enrolled in IDD programmes until 2024 will proceed with the “original programme structure before 2025.” No migration or specific transition is scheduled as the restructuring affects only new entries. It also specified that “no programs were discontinued,” and the number of seats available stays the same.
