Experiential learning is crucial to be successful in the modern world and as of now, there is a lack of practical exposure to students. This is more crucial for the business and management education segment where practical exposure to the real-life work environment is key to getting employed.

Acknowledging the industry-academia gap, TIPS School of Management (TIPS SOM)was established with a mission to impart a combination of domain skills, business acumen and entrepreneurial traits using a competency-based education system, augmenting this with experiential learning activities through extensive industry interaction and providing a comprehensive entrepreneurial ecosystem that grooms graduates into becoming job creators.

By providing industry-oriented education, TIPS SOM is able to equip their students with the skills required to thrive in today’s ultra-competitive business realm. The institute endeavors to hone the unique skills of every student, thus helping us to either find or carve the unique niche which is best suited for his/her sphere of talents.

Uniqueness at its Core
TIPS SOM offers a 2-year MBA degree program with specialization in entrepreneurship which is approved by AICTE, New Delhi, and is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The college has added a significant aspect to their curriculum delivery that will emphasize industry learning and exposure through various activities such as work-study programs, guest lectures by senior people employed in the industry, immersion projects, and internships.

As part of the two-year program, students will have the opportunity to do multiple
internships. TIPS SOM is also an entrepreneurially driven institution and they have five start-ups inside the campus itself. The institute helps every student to develop a comprehensive business plan for a proposed business which will enable them to start a business of their own upon graduation. TIPS SOM also provide the students with the capability to see the ‘Big Picture’ of any organization that they may work for, which will enable them to work as an ‘Intrapreneur’ in the organization where their focus will be on the growth of the organization.

Along with the syllabi of Anna University, the institute has structured their curriculum with the blend of interdisciplinary curriculum that includes Domain expertise, Managerial Skill development and Entrepreneurial skill development. This is attained through the Work-Study Pattern, Internship, Management Activities and events organised to learn the practical aspect of the subject. The institute has a dynamic team of faculty who have both academic and industry experience to deliver top-notch business education.

To meet the high expectations of the industry, TIPS SOMhas been striving towards delivering ‘industry-ready’ students to the recruiters. Students regularly visit various industries to know for themselves the actual requirements of the industry and industrial practices. In addition, opportunities are extended to the students to interact with industry experts by way of organising guest lectures delivered by industry stalwarts and visiting faculty from various industries. Also, students at TIPS SOM gain a lot of industry exposure through their exclusive Work-Study program.

Staying Connected with the Industry
The institute maintains good relations with industries through tie-ups and MoUs. As part of the unique experiential learning approach at TIPS SOM, students are given opportunities to intern in allied organizations every summer for four weeks. Serving as an important part of their career preparation, internships help students in shaping their career in many ways including
helping students identify a career path, gain experience, enhance their abilities in their areas of interest and passion and determine the skill level needed to be successful after graduation. In addition, the unique Work–Study program offered at TIPS SOM provides an unprecedented curriculum to help individuals develop a sound and flexible base in the preferred domain along with the business acumen that is highly relevant to the current business environment and entrepreneurial skill sets that are nurtured through incubators, entrepreneur associations and business networks.

Research is an integral part of education, and management education is not an exception. In fact, research has to be real-time in case of management education so as to reflect the realities of the business environment including the markets. “For research purposes, students are continuously encouraged to do research activities as part of their assignments and projects. Moreover, students are required to undertake research activities in between the semesters.

Students need to prepare and submit the findings of their research in the form of a project report. Additionally, students are required to present their research activities in the form of a viva examination to a panel consisting of eminent members including the faculty”, says Dr.E.Venugopal, Principal, TIPS SOM and Visiting faculty from Industry. With all this, the institute is aiming to realize their vision to emerge as a premier institution in the country that provides young transformative higher education which enables their graduates to be responsible business leaders.

He has worked in various portfolios as HOD, Director and Principal in various leading institutions in Tamil Nadu. He is an entrepreneur and well-known corporate trainer with his own start up ‘Brainwave Business Solutions’. His areas of academic interest are Marketing and Human Resource Management and he is an editorial board member of many leading journals.
