Governor Josh Shapiro recently announced that Amazon is investing $20 billion in cloud and AI in Pennsylvania. The investment will generate at least 1,250 jobs and roll out workforce development initiatives for data center operations.

The first two data centers announced will be in Luzerne County, near the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, and Canoe Festival in Bucks County, at the former Keystone Trade Centre steel mill. Workers will be responsible for building, maintaining, and operating these facilities.

Amazon will offer workforce training that includes data center technician certifications, fiber optic fusion splicing workshops, and STEM education for K-12 students.

The state is committing $10 million towards education and training through the schools, community colleges, and union halls. Pennsylvania is ramping up efforts to acquire additional sites to facilitate permitting for Amazon's expansion. The company is also asking universities and start-ups to partner with them to expand AI development. This is Pennsylvania's largest private sector investment, and a historic shift in Pennsylvania's workforce.

"Pennsylvania is competing again—and I'm proud to announce that with Amazon's commitment of at least $20 billion to build new state-of-the-art data center campuses across our Commonwealth, we have secured the largest private sector investment in the history of Pennsylvania," said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

"Amazon's multi-billion-dollar investment in Pennsylvania reinforces our dedication to advancing AI innovation while creating lasting economic opportunities in the state," said David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer. "By expanding our cloud computing infrastructure, we're investing in Pennsylvania's future through new jobs, workforce development programs, and community initiatives. We look forward to helping drive the next generation of technology innovation, while delivering meaningful benefits for Pennsylvania residents."
