India Takes Commonwealth Games Baton From Glasgow

India concludes the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a fourth-place finish before officially receiving the Commonwealth Games flag and baton, marking the start of preparations for the centenary 2030 Games in Ahmedabad.

With the passing on of the Commonwealth Games Flag and Ceremonial Baton at the close of the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, India has officially kicked off its process of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The passing on is a symbol of handing over the hosting responsibilities to the city of Ahmedabad where the century-old event will be held.

This takes place following the remarkable performance of India in Glasgow, during which the team comes fourth overall in terms of medals won, having secured 39 medals, out of which 13 are gold, 17 are silver, and 9 are bronze. Even though they have competed in a substantially limited program that consists of 10 disciplines, instead of the 19 disciplines of the previous event, Indian athletes still put up a commendable show in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, para sports, cycling, gymnastics, and lawn bowls.

The ceremony involves Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, President of Indian Olympic Association PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi receiving the flag and baton for the Commonwealth Games. This will be followed by a cultural presentation highlighting the diversity and culture of India along with the readiness of Ahmedabad to host athletes and spectators from all over the Commonwealth nations in 2030.

In addition, the success of the Glasgow Games would also draw international focus towards the preparations being made by India for the upcoming games. The representatives of Commonwealth Sport have expressed confidence that the upcoming games hosted by Ahmedabad would be able to hold a bigger and more exciting tournament, involving 15-17 different sports compared to the more streamlined Glasgow games. It is widely recognized that India hosting the games is an opportunity for the Commonwealth Games to establish themselves for the future and gain importance on the international stage.

However, the Government officials state that preparations for Ahmedabad 2030 have started, concentrating on world-class sporting facilities, athlete’s experience, sustainability, and operational excellence. In addition, the Games are also supposed to be part of India’s larger goal of positioning itself as a sports hub in the international arena and help in realizing its dreams of hosting future multi-sport events such as 2036 Olympic Games.

As Glasgow hands over the relay baton to Ahmedabad, India is now moving towards a new era in the world of sports. Following the success of its campaign in Scotland, the country is now gearing up to host the Commonwealth sporting fraternity in 2030, and this time around, the target is a memorable centennial edition.
