Gauhati University to Conduct CET For Law Admissions

Synopsis: Gauhati University will conduct a Common Admission Test (CAT) for admissions to three-year LLB and integrated five-year law programmes from 2026, creating a unified and merit-based admission process across affiliated law colleges in Assam.
Gauhati University has announced that admissions to its law programmes will be conducted through a Common Admission Test (CAT) beginning with the 2026–27 academic sessions. The new entrance examination will serve as the single gateway for admission to both the three-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme and the five-year integrated law programmes offered by affiliated law colleges across Assam, excluding those under Dibrugarh University. The initiative aims to establish a transparent, standardised, and merit-based admission process for legal education in the state.
The Common Admission Test will replace institution-specific admission procedures by introducing a unified selection mechanism for participating colleges. Through a single entrance examination, eligible candidates will be able to compete for seats in programmes such as BA LLB, BCom LLB, BBA LLB, including their honours variants, as well as the three-year LLB course. The move is expected to simplify the admission process while ensuring uniform academic standards across affiliated institutions.
For admission to the three-year LLB programme, applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised university and satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by the Bar Council of India and Gauhati University. Candidates seeking admission to the integrated five-year law programmes must have successfully completed Class 12 or an equivalent examination with the minimum qualifying marks specified in the admission notification.

The entrance examination will assess candidates on subjects including General English, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning, Aptitude, and Basic Mathematics. The university has designed the examination pattern to evaluate the analytical, language, and reasoning abilities required for legal studies. Detailed information regarding the syllabus, marking scheme, examination schedule, and counselling process is made available through the university's admission portal.
Applications for the Common Admission Test will be submitted online through the university's admission portal, where candidates can complete registration, upload supporting documents, and pay the prescribed application fee. Following the examination, the university will prepare merit lists based on candidates' performance in the entrance test, after which counselling and seat allotment will be conducted.
University officials believe the introduction of a common entrance examination will improve transparency, streamline admissions, and ensure equal opportunities for aspiring law students across Assam. A centralised admission process is also expected to reduce duplication of applications, simplify seat allocation, and maintain consistent academic benchmarks among participating institutions.
The introduction of the Common Admission Test represents a significant reform in legal education admissions in Assam. By implementing a unified, merit-based selection process, Gauhati University aims to strengthen the quality of legal education, improve administrative efficiency, and provide aspiring law students with a fair and structured pathway into undergraduate legal studies.
