Himachal Central University Expands Chinese Language Courses
The Central University of Himachal Pradesh plans online Chinese language courses for border personnel and local communities, expanding access beyond its existing certificate and diploma programmes.
The Central University of Himachal Pradesh plans to expand its Chinese language programmes through online courses aimed at personnel serving in border areas and local communities interested in learning the language. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sat Prakash Bansal announced the initiative at Lok Bhawan in Shimla.
The university has already introduced Chinese language courses, including one-year certificate and diploma programmes, and has received admissions for these offerings. The proposed online expansion seeks to make language training accessible to learners who may find it difficult to attend classes on campus, particularly personnel stationed in remote border regions.

Bansal said the university had received directions from the Governor’s office and referred to the Prime Minister’s emphasis on developing language skills among people living and serving near international borders. The initiative aims to help participants understand Chinese and improve their familiarity with developments in neighbouring regions.
The programme is intended to build linguistic capabilities in strategically important areas while extending educational opportunities beyond the university campus. Online delivery could enable interested learners from different locations to access structured language instruction without relocating to attend classes.
Chinese is one of several languages being promoted by the university as part of its broader language education initiatives. The institution also offers programmes in Dogri and Kashmiri and is working to revive the traditional Sharada script. It has established academic departments focused on Chinese and Tibetan studies, reflecting its wider engagement with regional and international languages.
The university’s Chinese language programme is also relevant to fields such as diplomacy, translation, tourism, international business and strategic studies. Developing proficiency in foreign languages can help learners pursue academic and professional opportunities while strengthening their understanding of neighbouring countries.
