Educational opportunities for Indian students in South Korea

Students from India have looked to the U.S, U.K, Canada, and Australia for their higher education, other education destination like Hong Kong, Singapore, Netherland and Germany are appealing to a diverse international student’s body. South Korea is the newest edition to this list for the student who is looking for alternative, unique experience. There are around 43 national and almost 180 private universities. The highest quality universities are located in Seoul including the three most well known universities –Seoul national University, Yonsei University and Korea University.

Education system:

South Korea has a large and diversified education system. Most undergraduate degrees are of 4 year duration. The academic year is divided into 4 semesters, with a summer break from July to August and winter break from December to February or may though this may vary from university to university.  In order to get admission in Korean university one need to be academically inclined and only students with a 36+ in their IBDP are considered by the top 7 universities.

Courses:

Studying in Korea can be a promising career for learner. Different courses which are offered by the universities are MBA in international business, in international trade, MA in international development and cooperation, M.E in computer engineering, civil engineering, and electrical engineering. Student can also opt for Both PhD programs in master’s degree and doctoral degree in various fields like Social science, natural science, business administration, engineering, tourism, music, fine arts and animation

Scholarships:

The Universities in Korea are recognized for its research and scholarship programmers offered for foreign students. Some scholarships are particularly meant for Indian students while others are for international students in general. The scholarship availability differs from 40%-100% depending on the grade they will score in English proficiency tests.

Fees:

South Korea has a comparatively lower cost of study considering both tuition and living costs and does not impose additional fees for foreign students. Studying in South Korea is relatively easy and affordable as compare to other study destination.

General living condition:

The majority of South Korea is rather inexpensive to live in. It is best to stay on campus in a dormitory. Still, one also has the options of living outside the campus in a one room flat, a boarding house or as a paying guest with a Korean family.

Even if the general public does not speak much English, most university students and young people speak English. South Korea has a well developed public transport system with a metro and bus system that is convenient, quick and affordable.

Employment:

Once you have been enrolled for one semester (six months) you will be able to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week). An application for employment has to be supported by a letter of recommendation from your university and the presentation of your student visa.

Korea is a fascinating destination for students who are looking for countries with the similar resources as the West, without the heavy price tag.
