- New Zealand plans Short-Term Graduate Work Visa allowing international students six months employment after completing studies.
- Policy expands post-study work options, helping graduates gain practical experience and transition into skilled employment.
- Government aims to attract global talent, address labor shortages, and strengthen the international education sector.
The New Zealand government has introduced immigration regulations which will create better employment prospects for international students who complete their studies. The country will launch a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa program while it expands eligibility requirements for its current Post-Study Work Visa.
The new regulations will assist international graduates in obtaining essential work experience while they complete their transition from educational institutions to jobs in industries that experience skill deficits.
The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa which the government just introduced will permit international graduates from approved programs to remain in New Zealand for six months after they complete their academic studies.
The graduate program provides students with a window of time during which they can search for jobs which may lead to a permanent work visa through the Accredited Employer Work Visa program that enables skilled employees to stay in New Zealand for multiple years.
The requirements state that students need to finish an authorized program which covers New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) levels 5 to 7 through a minimum of 24 weeks full-time education in New Zealand. The visa does not accept applications from people who complete English language or foundation programs.

The existing Post-Study Work Visa program will now accept additional applicants because of the newly introduced visa category which the government established.
Under the revised rules, graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF level 7 will be able to apply for this visa if they also hold a bachelor’s degree obtained either in New Zealand or abroad.
The latest update creates additional career paths for students who complete their undergraduate studies and begin specialized diploma programs.
The policy changes intend to strengthen New Zealand's international education sector while solving labor shortages which affect essential industries. The government plans to attract international talent by creating better employment pathways that enable students to enter the workforce after their studies.
