IGNOU Opens Registration for MSc in Climate Change

Synopsis: IGNOU starts registration for its new MSc in Climate Change programme for the July 2026 session. The two-year course is open to graduates from any discipline and focuses on climate science, sustainability and environmental challenges
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has started the registration process for its newly introduced Master of Science (MSc) in Climate Change programme for the July 2026 academic session. The initiative aims to provide advanced learning opportunities in climate science, sustainability and environmental management to students, working professionals and individuals interested in addressing global climate challenges.
The two-year postgraduate programme is designed for candidates from diverse academic backgrounds. Graduates from any recognised discipline are eligible to apply, making the course accessible to students who wish to develop expertise in climate-related studies. The programme carries a total of 80 credits and follows a flexible learning structure suitable for learners pursuing education through the open and distance learning mode.
IGNOU has structured the MSc Climate Change curriculum to cover important areas related to environmental transformation and sustainable development. The course includes topics such as climate change science, climate assessment methods, water resources, energy systems, biodiversity conservation, disaster risk reduction, waste management, circular economy, ecosystem restoration, environmental governance and climate-related policies.

The programme also provides learners with practical knowledge and analytical skills required to understand and respond to real-world climate issues. Through interdisciplinary education, students gain exposure to scientific concepts as well as policy frameworks, enabling them to contribute to sustainability initiatives at national and international levels.
One of the key features of the programme is its flexibility. Students who successfully complete the first year of the course may receive a Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change (PGDCC), allowing learners to gain a recognised qualification even before completing the full master’s degree.
The programme is coordinated by Dr V Venkatramanan and Prof Shachi Shah, who have designed the course structure to address the growing demand for professionals with expertise in climate adaptation, mitigation strategies and environmental sustainability.
IGNOU has also opened admissions for its July 2026 academic session across various undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate programmes. Students can apply through the university’s official admission portal for online and Open Distance learning courses.
With climate change emerging as a major global concern, the introduction of this programme strengthens opportunities for students and professionals seeking careers in environmental research, policy development, sustainability management and climate action. The course is expected to support the creation of skilled professionals capable of contributing to future environmental solutions.
