MP Mandates Mental Health Awareness for College Freshers
Synopsis: Madhya Pradesh makes mental health awareness sessions mandatory for college freshers, introducing wellness programmes focused on stress management, counselling support, and emotional well-being during student induction programmes.
The Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Department is making mental health awareness programmes somewhat compulsory for newly admitted college students, as part of the induction stuff from the upcoming academic session. The idea is to push stronger student support systems, and at the same time help freshers deal with academic pressure, stress, and those emotional issues that often show up when you first enter higher education, you know.
Under the new directive, government and private colleges across Madhya Pradesh will be running Mental Health and Wellness Programmes for first year students. In these sessions, the emphasis is on bringing awareness around mental health concerns, and giving students proper guidance for coping with stress, anxiety, and other psychological challenges that might come up during college life.
These programmes are set to cover stress management, time management, emotional balance, positive thinking, meditation, and life skills. Colleges have also been advised to bring in psychologists, counsellors, and mental health experts so they can interact with students and guide them on how to maintain emotional well-being.

The initiative also aims to familiarise students with available support systems on campuses, including counselling services, mentor-mentee programmes, and grievance redressal mechanisms. Along with mental health awareness, induction sessions will cover topics such as anti-ragging rules, cyber safety, responsible digital behaviour, and student welfare facilities.
The move comes amid a growing focus on trying to improve mental health support frameworks in educational institutions, sort of quietly but steadily. Earlier the University Grants Commission (UGC) put forward guidelines to bolster mental health and overall well-being measures in higher education, including dedicated support systems and counselling arrangements.
The Madhya Pradesh government says student mental health matters a lot for academic performance, personality shaping and the entire campus experience. The department has asked institutions to ensure the active involvement of freshers , and also keep proper records on how these programmes are actually being carried out.
The decision to make mental health awareness sessions mandatory seems to show a wider change, toward building more caring and inclusive learning settings. By weaving wellness education into the student orientation programmes , colleges are trying to help learners settle in better to campus life, and to reach support services whenever it is needed, not just after things go wrong.
