Tamil Nadu Budget 2026 Puts Focus on AI and Gen Z

Tamil Nadu's 2026-27 Budget places a strong focus on Generation Z through large-scale investments in AI skilling, free laptops, digital education, employment, and youth welfare. The state has announced a ₹2,000-crore laptop scheme, AI education from schools to colleges, and new initiatives aimed at preparing students and young professionals for technology-driven careers.

The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a Gen Z-focused Budget for 2026-27, placing technology, education, and youth empowerment at the centre of its development agenda. Presented by Finance Minister Marie Wilson, the Budget introduces a series of initiatives aimed at equipping students and young professionals with future-ready skills through investments in artificial intelligence (AI), digital education, and employment-oriented programmes.

A key announcement is the launch of a ₹2,000-crore free laptop scheme, which will provide laptops to eligible students to strengthen digital learning and improve access to technology. The government also announced the integration of AI education and skilling across schools, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), and higher education institutions, alongside a dedicated AI industry programme designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.

The Budget allocates ₹44,527 crore to the School Education Department, with funding earmarked for curriculum modernisation, AI and robotics education, upgraded government schools, cleaner campuses, and anti-drug awareness programmes. Authorities said these initiatives are intended to improve learning outcomes while preparing students for careers in emerging technology sectors.

Beyond education, the government has introduced measures to improve youth employability and digital readiness. Investments will support AI-driven skill development, innovation, and stronger collaboration between educational institutions and industry. The Budget also includes provisions for student welfare, sports, hostels, and digital infrastructure, reflecting a broader strategy to build a knowledge-based economy powered by skilled young talent.

Officials said the initiatives align with Tamil Nadu's long-term ambition of becoming a US$1.5 trillion economy, with technology and innovation serving as key growth drivers. By expanding digital infrastructure and strengthening AI capabilities across the education system, the state aims to create a workforce equipped for high-value industries such as information technology, advanced manufacturing, and emerging digital services.
