NMC Urges States to Allocate FMG Internship Slots 2026

  • NMC directs states to allocate internship slots for foreign medical graduates for the 2026–27 academic years.
  • Initiative aims ensuring eligible FMGs receive compulsory clinical training required for medical registration and practice.
  • States must follow seat matrix guidelines and coordinate with medical institutions to implement internship allotments.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has instructed all State Medical Councils across India to begin allocating internship positions for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) for the academic year 2026–27.

The directive establishes a procedure which enables students who completed their medical degrees abroad to receive required clinical training in India.

The commission requires states to begin distributing available Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) slots according to the comprehensive seat matrix which has been provided to authorize personnel.

The CRMI is an essential part of medical training in India, requiring graduates to undergo supervised clinical rotations in various hospital departments before they can receive full registration to practice medicine.

Foreign medical graduates must complete this internship in India after they have passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and met the other eligibility criteria established by regulatory agencies.

The NMC's latest directive aims to resolve the permanent difficulties that FMGs encounter when they try to obtain internship positions which have restricted availability in medical colleges and teaching hospitals.

The commission has found about 43000 CRMI internship positions which will be available throughout all states and union territories during the 2026 to 2027 academic period.

The distribution of seats will occur through a state-wise and institution-wise allocation plan which determines how many seats each medical college and eligible institution can receive.

The NMC has requested state authorities to work together with their local Directorates of Medical Education to start the allotment process which needs to follow established rules and regulations.

The commission requested states to examine the provided seat matrix and report any found discrepancies or inaccuracies within a designated time period.

The NMC designed its internship allocation system through standardization and expanded training capacity to simplify the process which foreign medical graduates use to acquire clinical experience and join the Indian healthcare system.

The regulatory authority implemented this measure because it wants to increase transparency, reduce the number of unfilled internship positions and provide necessary clinical training to qualified international medical graduates who want to work in the country.
