Tripura Approves 250 New MBBS Seats at Agartala Medical College

Agartala Government Medical College gets approval to raise its MBBS intake to 250 seats for 2026- 27, adding 100 seats and expanding medical education opportunities in Tripura.

Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval to increase its MBBS intake to 250 seats for the 2026-27 academic session, according to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. The expansion adds 100 seats to the college’s earlier intake of 150 and is expected to create additional opportunities for medical aspirants in the state.

The approval comes amid a broader expansion of undergraduate medical education in India. AGMC operates from the premises of Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala, Tripura’s capital and one of the state’s major healthcare institutions. With the latest increase, the combined MBBS intake across Tripura’s three medical colleges is set to reach 500 seats, according to the state government.

The development follows an earlier increase in AGMC’s intake. In September, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had approved 50 additional seats, taking the college’s intake from 150 to 200. The latest announcement represents a further expansion of 50 seats over that figure.

Chief Minister Manik Saha said the higher intake would provide more opportunities for students seeking medical education within Tripura while supporting the state’s healthcare and medical education infrastructure. He also said the state is planning to establish a full-fledged medical university to oversee its medical colleges, nursing institutions and paramedical institutes.

According to Saha, AGMC will now join the group of medical colleges with an annual intake of 250 MBBS students, which he described as the maximum permissible intake under NMC norms. He cited institutions including Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College and King George’s Medical University among colleges with 250 MBBS seats.

GBP Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr Kanak Chawdhury said preparations are underway to support the expanded intake. The institution is reportedly working on appointing around 25 additional faculty members and developing the infrastructure required to accommodate the increased number of students.

The expansion comes as India’s overall MBBS capacity also rises. The revised NMC seat matrix for 2026-27 lists 1,40,214 MBBS seats across 836 medical colleges, excluding Institutes of National Importance.
