The Google has partnered with South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand digital skills training and create additional employment opportunities for young people.
The agreement establishes a framework for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies throughout South Africa's educational system to assist educators and learners in preparing for emerging career paths.
This collaboration is part of a broader effort to strengthen workforce readiness and ensure that youth are equipped with relevant, future-oriented skills.
The partnership provides training programs to thousands of students and educators and IT staff members who work at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and community education institutions.
The program offers approximately 5,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships which cover AI and cyber security and data analytics fields of study.

The program specifically targets rural areas and understudied communities to provide digital education and professional opportunities to their residents.
The collaboration will develop educational programs through AI and technology training which will serve as the foundation for their curriculum development work.
Google will provide several resources to assist educational institutions which include tools and technical support and guidance for system upgrades and educator training through the "Generative AI for Educators" program.
The partnership includes two main areas of work which focus on developing policies related to AI and establishing guidelines for its responsible use in educational settings.
The MoU establishes a major public-private partnership which works to eliminate digital skills shortages while providing youth empowerment and workforce development for South Africa's digital economy needs.
