Vietnam, US Deepen Cooperation in Education and Training

Vietnam and the US seek deeper cooperation in higher education, vocational training and strategic technologies, with a focus on semiconductors, AI, digital technology, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and workforce development.

Both Vietnam and the U.S. are trying to increase cooperation in terms of education and training programs, especially focusing on higher education and vocational skills. The move was made due to the fact that both countries try to develop their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

At a meeting held in Hanoi on August 12, Nguyen Thi Thanh, Vice President of the Vietnamese National Assembly, talks about areas that can enhance cooperation at a time when she receives an American House of Representatives delegation led by Tim Walberg, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. She emphasizes the significance of education and training in promoting mutual relations.

According to Thanh, Vietnam needs to improve its tripartite cooperation between Vietnamese universities and US colleges and companies. Such cooperation will concentrate on areas where there is high demand for skilled employees in Vietnam, such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, digital technology, biotechnology, and other technologies. The goal of such cooperation is to relate academic knowledge to industry needs and allow students to learn necessary skills.

She also urges increased involvement of firms in the process of determining manpower needs, designing curriculums, furnishing experts from industry, and offering internships and jobs for students. Vietnam has been urging credible American universities to set up branches in the country or offer their courses there in an effort to foster sustained academic collaboration.

Vocational education and workforce development are other areas of collaboration that arise as being vital. The government of Vietnam is interested in increasing cooperation in the area of skills development and productivity in the workplace, especially by linking vocational training schools with professional associations operating in high tech industries.

Discussions will also focus on the effects of the digital revolution and automation on workers. Vietnam aims to share its experience in adjusting the workforce to new technologies and making improvements in working conditions.

On the other hand, Walberg shows his willingness to support the expansion of education and training cooperation, especially at the higher education level. Furthermore, he has shown that he will assist in linking US companies to Vietnamese education institutes.

These proposals demonstrate the increasing role of education, science and technology, as well as skilled manpower, in Vietnam-US relations. Through fostering university and industry collaboration, increasing vocational education and promoting international cooperation in academic spheres, the two countries seek to create a workforce that will be able to foster new technological industries.

The collaboration also enables the creation of linkages between the students, researches, university, and businesses to help Vietnam achieve its objective of nurturing skilled human resources in important areas.
