AIIMS, ISRO Join Hands to Advance India Space Medicine

  • AIIMS Delhi and ISRO sign partnership to advance research in space medicine and astronaut health.
  • Collaboration will study human physiology, microgravity effects, immunity, genomics, and psychological health during space missions.
  • Research supports India’s human spaceflight ambitions while improving medical knowledge and healthcare innovations on Earth.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi has established a research partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop the scientific area of space medicine.

The partnership between India, which has its top medical research institution, and its national space agency, officially began when they signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi.

The program aims to enhance national abilities which research how outer space environments impact human health because India prepares for its upcoming human spaceflight missions.

Under the agreement, scientists and doctors from both organizations will work together on several research areas related to human survival and performance in space.

The research partnership will investigate human body functions during microgravity conditions, which include studying cardiovascular systems, musculoskeletal development, and autonomic system control.

The study will investigate human microbiome, immunology, genomics, biomarkers, and behavioral health aspects of research. The studies will use ground experiments and space-based research to help scientists study astronaut body reactions during extended space missions.

The officials explained that their partnership will provide advantages which extend beyond the research of space exploration. Dr. M. Srinivas who serves as the director of AIIMS explained that their collaborative work will advance space medicine while also developing better medical solutions for terrestrial patients.

Medical discoveries from space research enable scientists to create new therapies and medical devices while they learn about human body functions. The collaboration between medical specialists and space scientists will create new healthcare solutions which will advance India's scientific research system.

ISRO leaders explained that India needs to establish partnerships with leading medical institutions to achieve success in its human spaceflight programs.

The country needs space medicine research to protect astronauts during its upcoming crewed space missions which support its expanding space exploration initiatives. The AIIMS-ISRO collaboration will establish India as a leader in biomedical science and space technology while establishing capabilities for future human space exploration missions.
