IIT Madras Hosts National Student Wellness Workshop

Synopsis: IIT Madras and the Ministry of Education have organised a national workshop on student wellness, bringing together higher education institutions to strengthen mental health support and sustainable well-being initiatives on campuses.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has organised a two-day national workshop on student wellness to strengthen mental health support systems and promote holistic well-being across higher education institutions. Titled "Celebrating Minds: From Academic Excellence to Sustainable Wellness," the workshop is being held on July 12 and 13, 2026, under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme. The initiative forms part of the Ministry's nationwide effort to integrate student wellness into the broader framework of higher education.
The workshop has brought together more than 200 faculty members, counselors, student support professionals, and administrators from universities and colleges across South India. Participants are engaging in discussions on strengthening institutional mechanisms that support students' emotional, psychological, and academic well-being. The programme recognises that student success depends not only on academic achievement but also on access to effective mental health resources and supportive campus environments.
Throughout the workshop, experts are conducting sessions on mental health awareness, stress management, counselling practices, crisis intervention, peer support systems, and strategies for building inclusive and resilient campus communities. Participants are also exchanging best practices adopted by higher education institutions to address challenges such as academic pressure, anxiety, social isolation, and emotional distress among students.

The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on embedding wellness into institutional policies rather than treating it as a standalone service. By equipping faculty members and student support teams with practical knowledge and intervention strategies, the workshop seeks to create campuses where students receive timely guidance and comprehensive support throughout their academic journey.
IIT Madras has consistently prioritised student well-being through dedicated counselling services, wellness programmes, and mental health initiatives. The institute recently became the first Centrally Funded Technical Institution (CFTI) in India to establish an ISO-certified Student Wellness Centre, further reinforcing its commitment to high-quality mental health support and student care.
Officials noted that the workshop aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates holistic education by integrating academic excellence with physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Strengthening wellness ecosystems within higher education institutions is expected to improve student engagement, retention, learning outcomes, and overall campus experience.
By bringing together educators, counsellors, and institutional leaders, the national workshop provides a collaborative platform to develop sustainable student wellness frameworks. The initiative underscores the shared commitment of IIT Madras and the Ministry of Education to creating healthier, more inclusive, and supportive learning environments that enable students to thrive academically and personally.
