Gauhati University, Thailand Discuss Research Collaboration

Gauhati University and a Thai delegation explore collaborations in higher education, research, IT, internships, training and student exchange to strengthen academic ties between India and Thailand.

Gauhati University and a senior delegation from Thailand hold discussions on expanding cooperation in higher education, research, information technology, training, and culture and student exchange. The interaction takes place on September 22, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen academic and institutional ties between India and Thailand.

The Thai delegation is led by Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs at Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation includes ministry officials and representatives from Thai universities. Discussions focus on potential student and faculty exchange programmes, research partnerships, internships, training initiatives and joint activities in information technology and higher education.

Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta highlights the historical, cultural and linguistic connections between Thailand, India and the Northeast. He points to links between the Thai language and the ancient Tai-Ahom language and highlights the university's efforts to promote and preserve these connections through academic initiatives.

Mongkolnavin identifies education, tourism, culture, training, internships and academic exchange as areas with scope for greater cooperation under the Thailand-India strategic partnership. She also highlights opportunities for collaboration in information technology and higher education.

The discussions bring together representatives from Thai universities, Gauhati University's deans, heads of departments, faculty members, research scholars and officials from the university's Centre for South East Asian Studies. The interaction provides a platform to examine opportunities for students, teachers and researchers to engage with institutions in both countries.

Gauhati University already has research collaborations involving institutions and research centres in Thailand, including Chiang Mai University, Mahidol University, Mae Fah Luang University and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand. The university also maintains a broader network of international academic and research collaborations.
