Gujarat offers ₹21,840 Monthly Support for Foreign Medical Grads

Gujarat approves a ₹21,840 monthly stipend for eligible foreign medical graduates undergoing compulsory internships in government and GMERS medical colleges, benefiting around 350 FMG interns.

The Gujarat government approves a monthly stipend of ₹21,840 for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) undergoing their mandatory internship in government and Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) medical colleges across the state.

The decision, announced by Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya, brings FMG interns on par with other medical interns receiving stipends in the state. Around 350 foreign medical graduates who receive internship postings between June 1 and October 1, 2026, are expected to benefit from the decision.

Under the National Medical Commission (NMC) framework, medical graduates who complete their MBBS education abroad are required to undergo a compulsory rotating medical internship in India as part of the process for medical registration. The stipend applicable to interns is determined by the concerned state or institution.

The Gujarat government’s decision covers eligible FMGs undertaking their internships in government and GMERS medical colleges. The ₹21,840 monthly amount matches the stipend paid to other interns in the state, according to the announcement.

The move addresses a long-standing concern among foreign medical graduates, many of whom return to India after completing their medical education overseas and are required to complete the mandatory internship before progressing towards registration and medical practice.

The decision follows discussions between the state government and officials regarding stipend payments for FMG interns. Health Minister Pansheriya announces the decision following a meeting at the state administrative building in Gandhinagar.

The All India Medical Students’ Association welcomes the announcement and describes it as the outcome of sustained representation and follow-up by FMG students. The association says the decision benefits eligible FMG interns undertaking compulsory internships in government and GMERS medical colleges.

The move also comes amid broader discussions over stipend disparities among medical interns across Indian states. While NMC regulations provide for stipend payments, the actual stipend rate is determined by the relevant state, university or institution.

Gujarat’s decision therefore provides eligible foreign medical graduates with financial support during their compulsory internship while aligning their stipend with that received by other interns in the state.
