Indonesia Partners With IIT Madras on Research Innovation

Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education partners with IIT Madras Global Research Foundation to strengthen research, innovation, deep-tech commercialisation, entrepreneurship and talent development under the India–Indonesia strategic partnership.

The Indonesia Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology has entered into an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with IIT Madras Global Research Foundation (IITM Global). The MOU is intended to enhance bilateral cooperation in higher education, scientific research, innovation, deep technology, entrepreneurship and talent development. This is a very important development in the furtherance of the strategic partnership between India and Indonesia.

The signing of the MoU takes place in connection with the visit to IIT Madras by Prof Brian Yuliarto, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology of Indonesia. This follows a series of recent bilateral discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, wherein both of them have expressed their determination to increase their cooperation in higher education, science and technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Under the terms of the agreement, both parties would engage in collaborative efforts in promoting joint research activities, fostering deep technology commercialization, developing technology-oriented startups, and encouraging faculty, researchers, and student exchanges. This collaboration is aimed at improving talent development by way of specialized training programs and innovative activities that tackle new challenges facing the world.

Among the objectives of the alliance is the need to connect research and industry through the development of commercially valuable technology from scientific discoveries. The partnership will facilitate this through collaboration among various players such as universities, government organizations, start-ups, and companies within the industry. This partnership seeks to build an environment for innovation-driven growth and sustainable technological development. IIT Madras Global Research Foundation will be one of the key facilitators in developing cross-border research collaborations.

This collaboration is in line with IIT Madras' larger strategy of increasing its presence on a global scale through international collaborations. Over the last few months, IITM Global has partnered with various universities and institutions in different countries with the purpose of fostering innovation and entrepreneurial spirit and also transferring technology. This partnership with Indonesia is another step in this direction.

The collaboration between the two countries is supposed to ensure the establishment of excellence, build innovation systems, and create economic growth through the exchange of knowledge and technology commercialization. With the integration of research priorities in Indonesia and the technological prowess of IIT Madras in the fields of science and engineering and innovation, the aim is to develop future-ready talent and solutions for the benefit of both countries.
