Top 5 Tech Skills that Will Rule India’s Job Market in 2026

Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI Engineering

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer the domain of an experimental niche but a major force behind business competitiveness. According to a global skills study, India leads the world in demand for data analytics jobs (17.4 percent of job postings) - a domain closely tied to AI - and ranks globally high in AI and machine learning openings. In addition, the surge in AI-related roles is unmistakable, with demand for specialized positions such as machine learning engineers, AI product managers, and prompt engineers growing robustly year over year.

“Between March 2024 and March 2025, demand for AI and data talent grew nearly 45%. But in emerging fields like GenAI, there’s just one qualified professional for every ten open roles,” said Quess IT Staffing Chief Executive Kapil Joshi.

Institutions need to incorporate practical AI training into the curriculum that would provide the students with the opportunity to work on real data, engage in OpenAI project development, and learn about the ethical issues of automated decision-making. Individuals who are familiar with Python, machine learning systems, model deployment processes, and ethical AI systems will be in high demand. This change also reveals the necessity of universities to collaborate with the industry in the development of their curriculum design, ensuring students master tools and thinking patterns that organizations seek.

Cloud Computing and DevOps

Cloud Computing is no longer an optional skill set; it has become the operational backbone of modern enterprises. Organizations now run critical services on cloud platforms, and they need professionals who can architect, secure, and scale these systems. As digital adoption accelerates, the demand for cloud expertise is high. According to NASSCOM report, India could require over two million cloud professionals by FY25, driven by widespread cloud migrations and digital transformation efforts.

Sandeep Soni, GM & VP - Engineering, Clumio India, “Engineers need to have cloud automation skills to build, test, deploy, and manage especially when there are rapid releases. DevOps is another important skill that is needed. A good cloud developer needs to enable a smooth running of software (in the cloud) for operations.”

From an educational perspective, cloud and DevOps competencies bridge foundational computing principles with industry practice. Students need exposure to multi-cloud platforms, container orchestration, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation tools. Moreover, linking these skills with real projects and internships allows learners to experience the continuous integration and deployment cycles that define contemporary software delivery.
