Delhi Proposes ₹10 Lakh Boost for Handloom Education in 2025-26

  • Delhi plans to raise the monthly stipend for handloom students at IIHT Jodhpur from ₹400 to ₹2,000.
  • The annual book and tour allowance for handloom students may increase from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000.
  • From 2025-26, these changes aim to support handloom students and strengthen India’s handloom sector.

The Delhi government has suggested increasing the financial assistance given to aspiring students studying handloom education in the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) Jodhpur five times, officials stated.

Industries Department of the government said in an official statement that there is a proposed substantial increase in financial assistance offered for students pursuing handloom education in IIHT Jodhpur.

The plan details enhancements in two main elements of student support. The extra state stipend is expected to increase from the current Rs 400 per month to Rs 2,000 per month, allocated for training for students in their first, second, and third years.

The statement mentioned that the educational book/tour allowance should rise from Rs 1,000 annually to Rs 5,000 per student each year, for those in their second and third years.

"This is a strategic investment in our youth and the timeless legacy of Indian handlooms. It is not merely a revision of numbers, but a conscious step to strengthen the foundation on which our future artisans stand.

"Even modest support, when thoughtfully directed, can empower students to complete their training with dignity and contribute meaningfully to the revival and modernization of traditional crafts," said Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

These improved rates are suggested to start from the academic year 2025-26. It is important to mention that the existing rates have not been modified since 2009-10, and no adjustments have occurred since that time.

According to an official, the expenses for study resources, technical literature, and educational trips have risen considerably over time, highlighting the need for improvements. For the fiscal year 2025-26, a budget of Rs 10 lakh has been set aside to cover costs associated with the scheme.
