IIT Madras January 2027 Admissions Open for PhD, MS Programmes

IIT Madras opens applications for PhD and MS by Research programmes for the January 2027 session. Candidates can apply online until October 30, with selection through written tests and/or interviews.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) opens applications for admission to its PhD and MS by Research programmes for the January 2027 academic session. Eligible candidates can submit their applications online through the institute's admission portal until October 30, 2026, at 5 pm. Applications submitted in physical or hard-copy form are not accepted.

The research programmes are offered across a broad range of disciplines, including Engineering, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Management. The programmes provide candidates with opportunities to pursue specialised research under the institute's academic and research ecosystem. Scholars may also participate in sponsored research, industrial consultancy and collaborative research projects, depending on their department and area of specialisation.

The application fee varies according to the candidate's category. General, EWS and OBC-NCL male and transgender candidates are required to pay ₹1,000. The fee is ₹500 for female candidates belonging to the General, EWS or OBC-NCL categories, as well as for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The application fee is non-refundable.

Candidates are advised to carefully review the eligibility requirements prescribed for their preferred department before submitting their applications, as academic qualifications and other requirements can vary across research areas.

The selection process is determined by the concerned department. Depending on the programme and department, shortlisted candidates may be required to appear for a written test followed by an interview, while some departments may shortlist candidates directly for an interview. The date, time and venue of the test or interview are communicated to shortlisted candidates through email.
