Union Cabinet Approves ₹11,828 Crore for Expansion of Five New IITs

The Union Cabinet led by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved to expand the academic and infrastructure capacity (Phase-`B’ construction) of five new IlTs established in the States/UT of Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Bhilai), Jammu & Kashmir (IIT Jammu) and Karnataka (IIT Dharwad).

The total cost for the same is Rs 11,828.79 crore to be incurred over a period of four years from 2025-26 to 2028-29.

The Cabinet has also sanctioned the creation of 130 faculty positions (at the level of Professor i.e., Level 14 & above) in these IlTs.

Five new state-of-the-art research parks are also coming up to strengthen industry-academia linkage.

With the commencement of operations of these IITs in 2016, the strength of students will be increased to more than 6500 at the end of 4 years with total enhancement of 1364 students in 1st year, 1738 students in 2nd year, 1767 students in 3rd year and 1707 students in 4th year across Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and PhD programme collectively.

After construction, the five IITs will accommodate 13,687 students as opposed to a current capacity of 7,111 students, an overall increase of 6,576 students. With the overall increase of available seats for students, an additional more than 6,500 students will be able to achieve their aspirations to study in one of the most prestigious and sought-after educational institutions in the country.

This contributes to nation-building by providing a pathway to skilled, innovative, and preparing educated humans driving economic growth and social mobility while also reducing educational inequality and bolstering India’s global position.

Direct employment will be created by hiring faculty, administrative staff, researchers, and support staff to manage the growing number of students and facilities. Also, through creating expanded IIT campus space will stimulate the local economy as more demand will be generated for housing, transportation, and services.

The increased number of alumni generated by IITs will spur innovation, supports more start-up ecosystems and ultimately generates jobs across a variety of sectors.
