AICTE Launches ₹245 Cr Doctoral Fellowship to Boost Innovation

AICTE launches a ₹245 crore doctoral fellowship programme to support 150 PhD scholars pursuing problem-driven research, with a focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer and real-world societal impact.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) launches the AICTE Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellowship Programme (AIEDFP) with a financial allocation of ₹245 crore over five years. The initiative aims to strengthen India's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem by supporting doctoral research that addresses practical challenges and produces solutions with measurable industrial and societal impact.

Under the programme, AICTE supports 150 doctoral fellowships for scholars undertaking multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The initiative moves beyond conventional academic research by placing greater emphasis on problem-driven and application-oriented projects that can contribute to technology development, commercialisation, technology transfer and social development.

The fellowship is designed to establish stronger connections between higher education institutions, research scholars, industry, startups and communities. By encouraging researchers to work on real-world problems, AICTE seeks to create an environment in which doctoral research can progress from academic ideas to technologies, products and solutions capable of addressing economic and societal requirements.

Financial assistance is a key component of the programme. Selected PhD scholars receive a fellowship of ₹60,000 per month plus applicable House Rent Allowance (HRA) for the first three years. The fellowship increases to ₹70,000 per month plus applicable HRA for the subsequent two years, subject to the programme's conditions and satisfactory academic and research progress.

The programme also focuses on developing an innovation-oriented research culture within technical education institutions. Research proposals are expected to demonstrate relevance to practical challenges and national priorities, while encouraging researchers to explore both technological and non-technological pathways to innovation. This approach seeks to improve the translation of academic research into solutions that can benefit industry and society.

AICTE formally launches the initiative on September 3, 2026, with Chairman Prof. Yogesh Singh and Member Secretary Prof. Shyama Rath associated with the launch. The programme is positioned as part of the council's broader efforts to strengthen India's research and innovation capabilities and prepare doctoral scholars to contribute to an increasingly knowledge-driven economy.
