NCERT Expands Into Higher Education With New Courses

- NCERT can now independently launch postgraduate, doctoral, diploma, and specialised academic programmes nationwide.
- Deemed university status grants autonomy for examinations, curriculum development, and awarding educational degrees independently.
- Initiative supports NEP 2020 goals promoting innovation, research, and advanced teacher education systems.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will begin to expand its academic activities because the Ministry of Education has granted it "deemed-to-be university" status. NCERT now has the authority to create its own postgraduate (PG) and doctoral (PhD) and diploma and specialized academic programs in education and research. The organization will undergo complete change because it has evolved from its original mission to develop educational materials and train teachers for the country's top educational institution.
The upgraded status allows NCERT to create educational programs and assessment methods and grant academic degrees and develop new academic initiatives according to National Education Policy 2020. The officials announced that the institution must establish doctoral research programs together with new interdisciplinary educational programs that focus on research in developing academic disciplines.
The deemed university framework will include NCERT headquarters in New Delhi along with its constituent Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) located in Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysuru, Shillong, and the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education in Bhopal. The institutes used to function through relationships with various state universities which restricted their academic independence and ability to create courses.

The educational development will improve teacher training and research studies about teaching methods and development of new curricula and educational technology research in India according to education specialists. NCERT will now be able to launch specialised PG and PhD programmes focused on educational leadership, pedagogy, curriculum studies, digital learning, teacher training, vocational education, and other emerging academic disciplines.
The officials stated that the institution should follow University Grants Commission (UGC) standards which need to obtain NAAC and NBA accreditation while participating in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The ministry has instructed NCERT to maintain its non-commercial academic character while expanding higher education opportunities nationwide.
The relocation will enable NCERT to transform into a complete research and higher education institution which will draw students and researchers and educators from both India and other countries. Experts predict that the initiative will enhance teacher education innovation while it helps India modernize its educational research and professional training systems.
