IITs Offer Up to ₹3 Lakh Scholarships for Top Exam Rankers

Several IITs offer special scholarships and fellowships to top performers in JEE Advanced, GATE and JAM, with financial support ranging from ₹25,000 monthly to ₹90,000 and annual assistance of up to ₹3 lakh.

Many IITs come up with unique scholarship and fellowship schemes in order to attract and help talented students who rank highly in national-level entrance exams like JEE Advanced, GATE and JAM. These schemes offer financial aid to talented students, and in some cases, financial need is also considered along with academic merit.

One of the popular ones includes Director’s Platinum Jubilee Excellence Fellowship (DPEF) offered by IIT Kharagpur, which provides considerable monetary assistance to GATE aspirants with high ranks to pursue their doctoral programs. Those GATE 2026 aspirants ranking in the top 50 can get a monthly allowance of ₹80,000 during the initial two years and ₹90,000 during the next three years if they opt for a PhD at IIT Kharagpur.

IIT Kharagpur is also offering the DPEF scheme to top rankers of JAM 2026. Students who secure ranks between 1 and 50 and enrol for the master’s program in the institute will be provided a stipend of ₹5,000 per month for two years, along with a total of ₹60,000 for a summer internship cumulatively. This scholarship opens up another route for excellent master’s students to pursue doctoral studies.

The Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur, provides a scholarship known as the Bright Minds Scholarship to high-ranking JEE Advanced candidates. All India Rank 1 to 100 candidates studying eligible bachelor’s courses in the institute will get an amount of ₹3 lakh each year. The scholarship period may extend up to four years, depending on meeting the desired academic standards.

James Thomason Scholarship at IIT Roorkee gives a monthly amount of ₹25,000 to those who qualify for JEE Advanced and have a rank up to 250, as per the required academic requirements. The students need to fulfil certain minimum performance criteria in order to continue enjoying the scholarship benefits.

IIT Delhi also offers merit scholarships to those who excel in JEE Advanced. IIT Delhi’s scholarship scheme takes into account both the student’s entrance examination performance and his/her family income. IIT Delhi has even created a full-tuition scholarship scheme for selected top performers among its undergraduates, including a specific fellowship program for the best-performing woman in JEE Advanced.

In addition to any institute-specific plans, students who have qualified for the GATE exam can also avail themselves of financial assistance as per the existing guidelines. This financial assistance will be around ₹12,400 per month for qualified MTech students and more for PhD scholars depending on their field of study.

The above examples highlight the way in which scholarships and fellowships are being utilised by IITs to reward academic excellence and remove financial barriers to higher education and research. By tying financial assistance to performance in competitive examinations and academic success, and in some cases, financial need, IITs hope to attract the best students and motivate them to engage in research and study further.

Not only does the enhanced academic world provide more reasons for students to think about postgraduate and doctoral courses rather than being restricted to undergraduate studies and job options alone, but the options also give an extra financial edge to the JEE Advanced, GATE and JAM hopefuls seeking admission into India's top technical universities.
