Two prestigious institutions, The Ohio State University and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), have established a partnership that has the potential to transform the realm of higher education and research for prospective PhD candidates.
This international collaboration creates a fresh route via a dual doctoral degree program, leveraging the unique strengths of both the American and Indian institutions.
IIT Bombay is regarded as a leading technical institution in India, mainly recognized for its engineering orientation. Conversely, Ohio State has a solid reputation in various academic and research fields.
The collaboration among these institutions is anticipated to enhance their shared academic strength and also aid in the development of the global workforce. This expected increase arrives during a period when international educational experiences are becoming more significant.
Professor Balasubramaniam Shanker of Ohio State underscored the program's merits, stating, "This new opportunity will help students gain an international experience in graduate education and provide access to new information and perspectives, innovative concepts and methods, emerging research technologies, and unique populations and environments not typically available at a single institution and country," in a statement obtained by OSU News.

Additionally, the dual degree program doesn’t begin from the scratch; it is closely linked to the IIT Bombay-Ohio State Frontier Science and Engineering Research Center, a project that is already nurturing innovative research.
This academic infrastructure layer is expected to stimulate additional research initiatives for students in the dual program, especially with a primary emphasis on microelectronics and artificial intelligence.
Steven A. Ringel, IMR Executive Director, and a distinguished professor, said, "This program will offer exceptional education and hands-on research training to graduate students by providing access to complementary strengths, expertise and facilities at both institutions. Along with the vibrant Frontier Center, this program deepens Ohio State’s collaboration with a premier Indian university and supports globally connected graduate education," according to details shared by OSU News.
