The University of Delhi has approved a significant academic initiative to offer foreign language courses in an online format through its School of Open Learning (SOL), aiming to expand access and flexibility for students.
The university's Executive Council approved the decision to move forward with digital education because online learning has become increasingly popular among students. The courses which used to be offered only in physical classrooms now allow students who cannot attend campus classes to participate in the program.
The online language programmes will be delivered through multiple departments, including the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, the Department of East Asia Studies, and the Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugric Studies.
Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of global languages such as French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian.

The university provides this varied selection to teach students essential skills which have become vital for success in international business and tourism and diplomatic fields.
The courses will begin to be implemented for the 2026–27 academic sessions or at a later time when the university has completed its necessary preparations. Students will use online platforms to access their video lectures, assignments, and other educational resources which they can watch at any time.
The flexible study option provides working professionals and students who live outside Delhi with two major advantages because it removes distance restrictions and allows them to choose their own study times.
Officials have stated that this initiative forms part of their ongoing effort to modernize educational delivery while meeting students' extended demand for online courses. The project will improve accessibility while it creates opportunities for skill development and enables learners to acquire international language skills without having to attend classes in person.
