Google Launches AI Education Initiative in India

Synopsis: Google launch a nationwide AI education initiative in India, and it has UNICEF support, to expand AI literacy, and teacher training, plus a set of digital learning tools. The whole programme is meant to reinforce learning inside the classroom, while also encouraging a more responsible kind of AI adoption across schools.
Google has launched a big artificial intelligence education drive in India, working with UNICEF and several state education bodies, to somehow boost AI literacy among teachers and students. The announcement came out during the Education World Forum 2026 in London, as part of Google’s wider attempt to encourage responsible as well as inclusive AI use in learning matching India’s National Education Policy NEP 2020.
As part of the initiative, Google introduced the Google AI Educator Series (GES). It is a mobile-first training programme, sort of designed specifically for school and higher education teachers, and not really for everyone else, at least in the beginning. This programme will start being implemented in partnership with the governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Assam, plus the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Punjab School Education Board too. The idea behind the training is to help educators integrate AI tools, responsibly, into classroom learning and teaching workflows. In practice, it includes using Gemini in a thoughtful way so the whole process stays aligned with real teaching needs.
Google said the educator training programme will be localized into six Indian languages during its first year, like Hindi, Assamese, Marathi, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi. The company also wants to roll out the same effort to extra states, universities, and educational regulators over time. Officials mentioned that the AI training modules are built to stay practical, nimble, and easy to reach for teachers working in different schooling settings, across India.

Alongside educator training, Google, UNICEF, and Google.org have joined forces on this wider initiative, meant to cut down digital inequality and to spur new ideas in learning for students in India and elsewhere, such as Brazil, Pakistan, and Kenya. It looks to better access to digital learning materials and AI powered educational chances, especially in communities that are underserved.
Google has, expanded a few AI powered educational tools for Indian students as well. You’ll see things like AI supported study guides, little quiz style features, and JEE Main preparation tools, all within Gemini. There are also AI enhanced options in Google Classroom that are meant for teachers. Earlier in the year Google.org announced a grant of ₹85 crore to Wadhwani AI, aiming to back adaptive learning systems, which are expected to reach millions of students and educators across India.
Education experts say this initiative kind a mirrors India’s fast, growing attention on AI in classroom learning, digital literacy, and a workforce that’s ready for what comes next. India has also turned into one of the world’s biggest users of AI-enabled educational tools, especially for students who rely on Gemini for studying and for some academic support.
